Sweden and the Nordic countries have strong, quality-focused demand for Basmati rice from Middle Eastern, South Asian and Swedish households, restaurants and supermarket chains. Eastgate Export already supplies buyers in Sweden. This guide explains what Swedish importers need: EU pesticide rules, border checks, Swedish labels, duty, shipping to Gothenburg and packing.

What Swedish Buyers Look For

  • Food safety first – Nordic retailers ask for lab reports, traceability and certified suppliers.
  • Extra-long grain and aroma – 1121 and 1509 Basmati for retail and restaurants.
  • Private label – many Swedish importers sell under their own brand with Swedish and Arabic text.

EU Pesticide Limits and Border Checks

EU maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides are among the strictest in the world – for several rice pesticides the limit is 0.01 mg/kg. Indian rice is on the EU list for increased official checks for pesticide residues, so some consignments are sampled at the border control post.

Only buy EU-norm pesticide-residue-free Basmati with a lab report for each lot – read why EU-norm rice is non-negotiable.

Import Duty

Husked (brown) Basmati of varieties listed in EU Regulation 2023/2835 enters at zero duty with a certificate of authenticity. Milled and parboiled Basmati pay the normal EU duty for milled rice. Ask your customs broker for the current rate.

Best Varieties for Sweden

Swedish Labelling

Retail packs sold in Sweden need Swedish-language labels: product name, net quantity, ingredients, best-before date (bäst före), storage conditions, country of origin, EU food business operator name and address, lot number and nutrition declaration. We print Swedish/English or Swedish/Arabic bags under your private label.

Documents We Provide

  • Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading
  • Certificate of origin and REX statement where applicable
  • Phytosanitary and fumigation certificates

  • Health and HALAL certificates on request

You need an EORI number to import into the EU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell the same rice in Denmark, Finland or Norway?

Denmark and Finland are in the EU single market (labels must be in their languages). Norway is outside the EU but in the EEA – check Norwegian customs rules before re-export.

Is Indian Basmati checked at the Swedish border?

Indian rice is under increased EU checks for pesticide residues, so some shipments are sampled. EU-norm tested rice avoids rejections.

How long does shipping to Sweden take?

About 5–7 weeks from Mundra or Nhava Sheva to Gothenburg, depending on the route.

Do you already export to Sweden?

Yes, Eastgate Export already supplies customers in Sweden.
